Rock is "dead" in the sense that it is no longer the cultural mainstay that it was during decades past. In many ways hip-hop has taken its place, which I have no issue with. The underground is alive and well. If you think there is no longer compelling, innovative rock music, doused in talent, you either aren't paying attention or have narrow sensibilities. Who cares if hair metal isn't all the rage anymore. That doesn't effect true art. Popularity comes in cycles, but there's always going to be a niche of passionate people keeping a scene going, even if not in the physical sense. But hey, maybe even ska will shine again someday. On another note, the ubiquity of the Internet has resulted in somewhat of a post-genre, post-subculture world, where everything blends and mutates, and most people no longer feel such a strict allegance to a single scene or musical identity. Now, I'd say this has its pros and cons when it comes to community and comradery, but I think diversity of artistic palette is a benefit to the mind and I'm thankful to have such a broad array of music so easily accessible. Rest in peace, Steve 💐

Dc punk didn’t end with fugazi. One of the issues about how dc punk is portrayed is they basically make it seem like it all ended at some point and it makes people forget about dc… kinda blows my mind

This guy is so articulate and dialed into what was going on at the time. I grew up in Buffalo in the 70’s and Triumph was a huge band in the late 70’s/early 80’s. Without being derogatory, they were sort of that 2nd tier of bands behind Zeppelin, the Stones, The Who, etc., but there were there. They were very talented musically and brought in some almost Randy Rhodes type of classical aspects. Great video!

I do feel like the band (and what I heard from sources close to these people) fell apart because the members didn’t get along that well like you think they did. And this happens to so many bands. What I think is that Jerry and Layne were best buds at the very beginning. Layne was still a very outgoing and bubbly person back then. (Remember they both came from the hair metal scene first.) Layne and Jerry were both coke heads back then, which resonates with their personalities at that time. I feel like Alice in Chains was more Jerry’s child than it was Laynes. And when they got big, this pressure and responsibility + addiction got the best of Jerry. Really amplifying his controlling nature. Layne was NOT into the fame in the same way Jerry was. Jerry was a show off, he liked the lifestyle. Layne was very humble, really living in his own world. He didn’t really think about it in the same way. I think the pressure from Jerry made Layne turn more into himself and close himself off. And I also think this is the very reason he got in touch with opiates/downer drugs. He needed to cool off. He needed to release. People say Jerry looked at Layne a lot during performances because he cared so much about his brother that was slowly dying. And I do believe that’s partly true, but I also believe that Jerry did that out of control. He was constantly making sure Layne was good enough. The rest of the band was just having a great time, Jerry was monitoring Layne constantly, also Mike Starr occasionally. I feel like Jerry knew Layne was the powerhouse of the band, and needed him to get to the stardom he wanted, so in order to keep Layne well enough to perform he kicked Mike out of the band. I think Jerry was behind this idea as much as the management. Mike was the person Layne felt comfortable with. And they could do their own little bad things together. Mike however was probably not as important as Layne in Jerry’s eyes so he got rid of him and thought he could be easily replaced. I feel like this is what really drove the band apart. And what made Layne a recluse. He felt controlled constantly. By his management and band members. That and the insane lifestyle of the road and withdrawals. They could all have seen it coming. It would have been smarter if they saw him as an actual person, and not a money machine. They should have gave the band a year or 6 months off to all get in shape, make sure layne gets to be with his family, and check him into rehab. But they didn’t. It was all forcefully not in a caring way. That’s probably also why he felt so alone

I can’t wrap my head around the fact that he’s gone. He’s really just one of those people who, for me at least, granted a certain safety just in knowing that he walked among us and was still doing things. I haven’t followed his recent work closely, but every time his name came up in an article or wherever else I would love to hear what he had to say. What’s for sure is that the world is lesser without Steve.
